What can I expect?
When you first contact me, we will usually arrange to have a 15-20 minute phone-call or Zoom conversation, this will be free of charge and will help us both make sure that I am the right therapist for you.
When we meet, you can expect me to listen closely to anything you have to say without judgement and without directing you. I will ask sensitive questions to help you find some clarity about why you may be feeling like you do.
Once we have established what is going on for you, we will work together to start finding out what you would like to be different, and how we can get you there.
We will look at your life from a holistic perspective, with an understanding that getting all your physiological and emotional needs met in balance is the key to good mental health. I will aim to help you in as few sessions as possible, and to equip you with tools and skills for life.
When appropriate, I may also use Guided Imagery (Hypnotherapy) to further embed our work.
I use recognised outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy. This will help both of us keep track of your progress.

What is Human Givens Therapy?
Human Givens therapy is a practical, forward-focused approach, which promotes skills and understandings that people can use to move on in their lives, rather than dwelling on what went wrong in the past.
Humans Givens therapists work from a bio-psycho-social perspective; understanding that mental health is about more than just psychology, but is impacted by social and environmental factors, as well as our physical wellbeing.
The guiding framework is the knowledge that as complex organisms, humans have a set of physical and emotional needs which must be met in balance to ensure good mental health. It is often when these needs are not being met that emotional distress occurs. From within this framework we work holistically, and in line with the latest neuroscientific findings, to help you better meet those needs and restore balance to your life.
Instead of being reliant on one ‘model’ of therapy, the human givens approach is flexible, making use of whatever techniques and approaches will best suit that particular client.

Do you work with trauma?
Yes. I use a specific non-invasive and gentle technique – The Rewind Technique – which has been shown to help people swiftly move on from past traumatic experiences.
The uniqueness of the Rewind Technique is that you don’t even have to discuss the details of your trauma with me if you don’t wish to, and the technique will still be effective. It is used to great effect by PTSD Resolution in treating soldiers suffering with PTSD and complex PTSD.

Will it be painful?
In a word - NO!
Many people are nervous about therapy, having heard that you “have to feel worse before you can feel better”, or assume that you have to revisit and analyse painful memories order to make progress.
That is not how I approach things.
In fact, there is strong new evidence to show that trawling though past difficulties won’t help you to feel better.
Instead, we will work collaboratively to establish what is standing in the way of you achieving good mental health. Then, with the aid of the latest psychological tools and techniques, I will help you to move on and let go of anything that is holding you back.

Who do you work with?
I work with all adults and teenagers.
For those under 16 I will also usually request an initial session with a parent or carer, this may not need to be a full session.
At present both my therapy rooms have steps up to the entrance. If this does not support your access requirements then I will be happy to work with you via Zoom, or if necessary I will source an accessible space for a face-to-face session.
I am LGTBQIA friendly, conscious of minority identities, and have a good understanding of Neurodiversity.
I am always open to new learning.

How many sessions will I need?
My aim is to help you in as few sessions as possible. Some people will find they can make significant changes after only 1 or 2 sessions; others require more ongoing support. I will be led by you and your individual needs.
Therapy will be booked on a session-by-session basis & you will be empowered to decide if you need to continue. I never block-book sessions or require you to enter into a contract for a minimum number of sessions.

How much are the sessions?
The sessions cost £65 and last for up to 75 minutes - please allow 90 minutes for the first session.
I have a number of sessions I can offer to students and those in receipt of Universal Credit for a discounted rate.

Where do you work?
On weekdays I offer face-to-face sessions from my peaceful therapy room, about two minutes walk from London Road (Brighton) train station.
Subject to availability I can also offer evening or weekend sessions from my therapy practise in Kemp Town.
I also work via Zoom if that is your preference.
